noun a member of a hereditary Hindu group of the lowest social and ritual status. See untouchable.
– origin from Sanskrit harijana, lit. ‘a person dedicated to Vishnu’, from Hari ‘Vishnu’ + jana ‘person’. The term was adopted and popularized by Gandhi.
