  • 1 a person's way of standing, moving, or behaving.
  • 2 relation; relevance: the case has no bearing on the issues.
  • 3 (bearings) a device in a machine that allows two parts to rotate or move in contact with each other with reduced friction.
  • 4 the direction or position of something relative to a fixed point, normally measured in degrees and with magnetic north as zero.

    ■ (one's bearings) awareness of one's position relative to one's surroundings.

  • 5 Heraldry a device or charge.
