1 a piece of jewellery consisting of a portrait in profile carved in relief on a background of a different colour.

2 a short piece of writing which neatly encapsulates something.

3 a small distinctive part in a play or film, played by a distinguished actor.

– origin ME: from OFr. camahieu, cama(h)u; later influenced by Ital. cam(m)eo, from med. L. cammaeus.
