– origin C17 (denoting a trap under a drain to catch solids): prob. an alt., influenced by pool1, of archaic suspiral ‘vent, water pipe, settling tank’, from OFr. souspirail ‘air hole’, based on L. sub- ‘from below’ + spirare ‘breathe’.
