  • 1 a long-tailed, crested songbird with glossy black plumage, found in Africa, southern Asia, and Australia. [Family Dicruridae: several species.]
  • 2 informal, chiefly Austral./NZ a stupid or incompetent person.
– origin C19: from Malagasy; sense 2 is said to be from the name of a very unsuccessful Australian racehorse of the 1920s.
