    ■ no longer in existence.

    ■ (of a volcano) not having erupted in recorded history.

  • 2 (of a title of nobility) having no valid claimant.
– origin ME (in the sense ‘no longer alight’): from L. exstinct-, exstinguere (see extinguish).
