  • 2 pompous speech or writing.
– origin ME: from OFr. fustaigne, from med. L. fustaneum, from (pannus) fustaneus ‘cloth from Fostat’, a suburb of Cairo; sense 2 perh. from the fact that fustian was used to cover pillows, implying that the language was ‘padded’.
