noun a plant of the borage family, cultivated for its fragrant purple or blue flowers. [Genus Heliotropium.]
– origin OE eliotropus (orig. applied to various plants whose flowers turn towards the sun), via L. from Gk hēliotropion, from hēlios ‘sun’ + trepein ‘to turn’.
