  • 1 a hard, typically green, stone consisting of the minerals jadeite or nephrite, used for ornaments and jewellery.
  • 2 the light bluish green colour of jade.
– origin C16: from Fr. le jade (earlier l'ejade), from Sp. piedra de ijada ‘stone of the flank’ (i.e. stone for colic, which it was believed to cure).
