noun a large crested plover with a dark green back, black-and-white head and underparts, and a loud call. [Vanellus vanellus.]
– origin OE hlēapewince, from hlēapan ‘to leap’ and a base meaning ‘move from side to side’ (because of the way it flies); the spelling was changed by assoc. with lap2 and wing.
