- 1 a person or animal that scavenges.
- 2 Chemistry a substance that reacts with and removes particular molecules, radicals, etc.
– origin C16: from Anglo-Norman Fr. scawager, from Old North. Fr. escauwer ‘inspect’; the term orig. denoted an officer who collected scavage, a toll on foreign merchants' goods.
