  • 1 spread or be spread out or further apart.
  • 2 (usu. as adj. splayed) construct (a window, doorway, or other aperture) so that it is wider at one side of the wall than the other.

  • 1 a tapered widening of a road at an intersection to increase visibility.
  • 2 a surface making an oblique angle with another, especially a splayed window or other aperture.
adjective [usu. in combination] turned outward or widened: the girl sat splay-legged.
– origin ME (in the sense ‘unfold to view’): shortening of display.
